It was another excellent tog fishing week with captain cindy on the miss atlantic and collect out of atlantic city, NJ. Many customers had their personal best and quality togs. Congratulations!!! Alvin took the leading on the tournament so far with a 11lb 8oz blackfish. We shall see if his current leading fish will still stand for the tournament after this coming up weekend trips. With the low 48 degree day air temperature, The blackfish bite turned on again at Atlantic City, NJ on 12/03/2011 with Capt. Collect. White crabs did the damage on those deep water bull dogs; customers limited out easily with some 7-8lb togs landed on the deck. Nick caught his personal best tog of 11lb, which also become the current leading fish of the tournaments. Congratulations!! There are still more trips coming up in the next couple weeks of December. Book a spot with us, have a good time and let's hunt some trophy togs. We do believe base on the current condition, we should and will have a great december tog fishing in 2011. It has being a wild November tog bites on the tournament dates at Atlantic City, NJ with steady keeper action along with some decent size 7 and 8lb togs. Mother nature has being on the warm side with cool water temperature. Of course, At the end of every tournament trip, there were plenty of stories of the big ones that got away. We also had a beautiful 13+lb tog that landed in the tournament caught by george the greek ( His personal best tog ever, Congratulations!! ). So far the tournament leading fish is 8lb 11oz by rodger. Thanks to every one who came on the trips!!! Good luck on hunting big togs in the second part of the tournament trips in december.

BFTC will host its 4th annual Blackfish Tournament. By booking on any of BFTC blackfish trips on these following boats: Miss Atlantic City(NJ), or Captain Collect(NJ), you will be automatically entered in our tournament. The fare for each trip will be $125 (tips for the mate included), which already includes the tournament entry fee. However, anglers must stay within the tournament guidelines to remain eligible (See Below).

1st Winning Prize for the Largest Blackfish (Tautog):

$1,000 check + $500 Fisherman Depot Gift Certificate+Trophy Plaque.

Eligibility: All anglers that book on our Miss Atlantic City(NJ), Captain Collect(NJ) blackfish charter trips during Nov. 21 - Dec. 17, 2011 are automatically entered in the tournament so long as they stay within tournament guidelines:

End Date: December 17, 2011

BFTC 4th Annual Blackfish Tournament Guidelines/ Grounds for Disqualification:
1. The heaviest blackfish caught during the tournament will win prize.
2. In the event of a tie for 1st place, parties will split 50/50 the first and second prize money.

3. Angler is allowed to fish only one rod at a time.
4. No Hermit Crabs. If the largest blackfish is caught using hermit crabs on trips during the tournament period, that fish will not be eligible for prizes.
5. No wire leader. If the largest blackfish is caught using wire leader (used as shock or as terminal tackle) on trips during the tournament period, that fish will not be eligible for prizes. Only monofilament and fluorocarbon leader line permitted. Monofilament, Flourocarbon, and Braid main lines are permitted.
6. Order of anglers boarding on the boat will be in the order in which payment was recieved (i.e., earliest payments = first to board).
7. All tournament fish will be weighed by the captain's using their certified scale.
8. All anglers participating in this tournament agree to do so at their own risk.
9. This tournament shall abide strictly to the NJ State Dept. of Environmental Conservation recreational fishing regulations and laws.

4/8/2011-4/9/2011 North Carolina Gulf Stream Jigging Trip

Black fin Tuna was definitely showing strong on this trip. Both days they caught multiple decent size black fin tunas on topwater casting and jigging. Joey hooked into two decent size amberjacks that estimated to be on the larger class, However, they were never meant to be landed for picturing. Both donkeys reefed the 80lb leader before he could gain control on it. Tetsu had the only african pompano of the trip, Al jigged couple gag groupers that all safely vented and released back to the blue ocean!!! Dominic had fun experience on his first jigging trip with tons of action. Overall, they all had a wonderful time with Captain Mike from liveline charters. 3/18/2011-3/19/ 2011 North Carolina Gulf Stream Jigging Trip

This was a "None-believers became believers after all" trip. Frank D, Frank V, and John were all new to the Gulf Stream vertical jigging as their first trip and they all had doubts on some of the past fishing trip stories!

The weather finally cleared up OK for their weekend trip with Captain Mike Jackson from Liveline Charters. Both days, they had multiple hookups on medium class amber and almaco jacks. The bigger class of jacks never made an appearance. But, mean attitude from those jacks gave them pretty much all the pain they could take. Besides amberjack actions, they also had some quality various gulf stream species. Highlight of the trip, John had a 56lb cobia, Frank had 3 african pompanos that weighted 30lb, 31lb and 31lb, Kint had a 34lb pompanos. Frank jigged a quality giant jack crevalle. Of course, the king mackerels, and barracudas caused some losing damage to all their terminal tackle and jigs (Ouch!!!)

Overall, they all had great time and wonderful trip experience. They are all "Believers" now!!! Here are some pictures of the trip. Enjoy!!!

2/27/2011 North Carolina Gulf Stream Jigging Trip

It has been a long winter here in NY. Lots of snowing and cold windy days. We have been waiting for a decent weekend weather window to go jigging in the Gulf Stream with Captain Mike Jackson of Liveline Charters down in North Carolina. We finally got that weather this past Sunday....in February!! Basil, George, Joey, Peter and Jon were able to make the drive down to NC and go jigging for a day.

We made it to the fishing grounds with just a little less than 2hrs on Capt. Mike's 31' contender boat. We were literally on the beautiful blue Gulf Stream water (65 miles offshore) on a 72 degree sunny day, wearing t-shirts in February (what more could we ask for!!)! During the first couple of drifts, we were into fish right away, Basil and George landed decent gag grouper which were safely released (grouper season is not open in NC until May 1st).

On the next couple of drifts, Joey was the first to land a decent Amberjack about 50" length ( I do believe that was his personal best so far, congrats!!). While we were on the same drift, Peter hooked into a good reef donkey that measured 57" x 36", and it would be the biggest amberjack of the trip. Constantly, our jigs were hammered by Amberjack and Almaco jack. Joey had the hot hand of the day with an African Pompano (40lbs), a Gag Grouper, a White Trevally, and a big Cobia that got away next to the boat. Basil and Jon also landed two African Pompano, each in the 30+lb range. During the rest of our day, the boat was filled with our laughs. When it was all over, we came back home with a NC tan on our skin and some sore bodies.....til' next trip.

BIG Thanks to Captain Mike from Liveline Charters, and the rest of the guys who made this trip happen! It was a great trip to mark the start the 2011 NC Gulf Stream Jigging season! Here are some pictures from the trip.. Enjoy!!

The Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis) is the largest member of the Family Moronidae ("The Temperate Basses") and is easily recognized by its overall silver hue overlain by black stripes. They occur in coastal waters of the eastern US. The striped bass are ancestrally marine, but contemporary sea-run (i.e., live in the ocean but breed in freshwater) and resident freshwater populations are common. The striped bass is evolutionarily a true bass, unlike the largemouth bass.

There are two major migrations of striped bass along the northeastern U.S. The north shore of New York City and Long Island provide habitat for striped bass born in the Hudson River. In contrast, a majority of the striped bass found on the south shore of New York City and Long Island derive from Chesapeake Bay. At one time, about 90% of the Atlantic stock of sea-run striped bass came from the Chesapeake. Remaining populations are scattered about rivers, estuaries, and tributaries across the northeast coastline, but their populations are substantially smaller. The striped bass have also been introduced in the west coast of the US, but those populations have not seen the success and popularity of their native counterparts on the east coast.

The striped bass is an opportunistic feeder. They are a voracious predator of various species of vertebrates (e.g., fishes) and invertebrates (e.g., squid, crustaceans, molluscs, worms).

Along the eastern seaboard, striped bass fishing has entranced anglers for decades. Millions of dollars are spent each year on striped bass-related merchandise and fishing tackle. One of the most expensive spinning reels available in today’s fishing market is designed specifically for surf fishing striped bass. Many anglers have dedicated their entire lives pursuing a trophy striper often to the abandonment of chasing other gamefish among other things:

What is it about the striped bass that makes it the ideal gamefish? The table quality of the striped bass is superb. It also has quite the aesthetic appeal. However, the main reason why this fish is so popular is probably because it frequents shallow, inshore waters, making it accessible to anglers from the shore. In fact, the world record striped bass (78lbs 8oz) was caught off a jetty by a surf fisherman in Atlantic City, NJ. From Maine down to North Carolina, millions of anglers cast out lures (called “plugs” by NY locals) or bait (called “chunks” by NY locals) trying to catch migrating stripers. When the spring or fall migration is in full swing, it is not uncommon for surf fishermen to prepare themselves for an extreme streak of fishing at any cost. D. J. Muller, author of The Surfcaster’s Guide to the Striper Coast eloquently describes this pursuit as follows:

"Surfcasting for striped bass is an experience rich in emotions, special places and unique people. Depending upon how well you know one of them, surfcasters are a special breed of fishermen; sometimes hard to get to know, seemingly half crazy in their quest, exceptionally dedicated and extremely clannish. They face special challenges, but also reap memorable rewards that most mere mortal never get to see, feel or brag about. The entire experience of surfcasting is one to be nursed and cherished for many years, and passed on to the next generation. Toss into the mix a combination of loyal friendships, solitude, a spellbinding ocean, a small army of unforgettable characters, and an absolutely amazing gamefish, and you have all the ingredients for an incredible lifelong fishing journey." A fair share of boat fishermen also target striped bass, making this species a favorite among all types of anglers.

Tips on catching blackfish (tautog)?

I. BACKGROUND:
Blackfish (Tautoga onitis), or "tautog" as they are called by anglers, is a gamefish species in the fish family of wrasses native to coastal marine waters of the eastern US. Blackfish are structure-oriented fish that typically occur around reefs, rockpiles, or wrecks. They are a long-lived species with mature females capable of achieving 40 years of age with weights of up to 25lbs. They are specialists on hard-bodied prey with a particular palette for crabs and clams. Anglers fish for blackfish typically using standard bottom fishing rigs. Blackfish are infamous for being extremely challenging to hook.

III. A DISCUSSION ON WHEN TO SET THE HOOK:
Tips on blackfishing (Originally posted on bftc forum [discontinued] on 11-30-2009, 03:24 PM)

Inquiring Angler: On Sunday November 22 [2009], I went on my first blackfish trip to Rhode Island. I was able to hook two fish but only one keeper. Was not sure when I should set the hook. Any suggestions as to when to reel them in. I know they tend to bite then come around for another bite. I'm not sure when to set the hook. Would appreciate any suggestions from you experienced black fish fisherman on how to have better luck next time I go for blackfish.

I hope that you enjoyed your first blackfish trip. It takes time to develop the feel of when to set the hook on blackfish. Generally, i will set the hook when i feel a solid TUG and wait out the TAP..TAP...TAP (my humble opinion). but it varies day by day. Follow the general guideline and develop your own feeling and confidence on when to set the hook.

I think that your question is simple. but the answer is not. As bftc pointed out it is a good idea to ignore the little taps and wait for a tug. This is much easier said than done. The type of bite will influence when and if you set the hook as well. I have seen some of the best Tog fishermen do a slow lift and not a swing to set the hook. If the bite is "picky" then patience is the key. If the bit is agressive then it will be much easier to hook fish. The best advice is to keep going on boats and then you will eventualy figure out the nuances of this very challengeing type of fishing. good luck!

I filmed this clip at my university. This pet blackfish could teach us a thing or two about being a better blackfish fisherman. Notice:

0:20 When the crab has claws, the tautog goes for the claw first and neutralizes it.
0:25 Then, the tautog pulls off the legs.
0:33 and 0:53 The tautog crushes the crab bits with its rear throat (pharyngeal) teeth.
0:59, 1:05, 1:40, and 1:44 ?????
2:03 When given the choice, the tautog prefers active prey despite having already working on the bigger, dismembered crab.

Detecting a tautog bite is probably the trickiest form of fishing around. I still have lots of trouble known when to set the hook. In the past, I set the hook hard, but now I find myself slow lifting once I feel weight on the other end. Either way, I'm still confused about it all.

In my (limited) experience, the bite changes constantly. I tend to over think it, by fiddling with my rigs, setup and bait presentation, but on the other hand have had people say that it's not "rocket science" either.

What works for me, is to see what the bite is like that day, and it can even vary from drop to drop. Some drops will have small picky fish. Other drops can have huge fish commiting suicide on your rigs. Pay attention to what you're feeling but also watch what's going on aroudn you, are you seeing big fish come up? small fish? lots of swings and misses? What did the last guy catch his fish on? Are certain areas of the boat getting all of the hits?

To give a much simpler answer, don't set the hook on the taps, you're likely to just pull the bait out of their mouths. Wait till you get the solid tugs, basically when the fish has got the bait (and hook) inside their mouths. Change your bait often, they can come by and suck out all the goodies, and you'll have nothing but and empty shell for them.

big fish don't tap or tug. if you ever feel your line go slack... swing for the fences, pray you land him and beware of muggers.

The Art of Vertical Jigging

Here are two videos that display the power and speed of long stroke jigging, a jigging style both beautiful and awesome. Watch carefully at the first video. Matsutani-san, owner of the Patriot Design rod who is an icon in the jigging sportfishing world, shows his stroking technique and fighting style. The balance of gear and angler form is simply like a perfect art.

Here is another angler displaying long stroke jigging. Note that his technique is as eloquent as Matsutani-san's. Another wonderful reference.

I found these videos to be timeless. They are worth watching and learning from again and again. If you happen to be new to the sport, these videos will serve as a great introductory reference for you or anyone interested in this extreme sport!!

2010 was another great success for our company. We ran a total of one-hundred fifty (150) trips and built our customer base to over three-hundred fifty (350) persons!

OFFSHORE SPECIES

* Liveline Charters (Wilmington, NC) – Gulf Stream Jigging. Many trophy gamefish this year. All of the following caught by our customers using jigs (no bait): 66” Wahoo, 41” Gag grouper, numerous 20+lb Red grouper, Cobia up to 70lbs, numerous African Pompano over 30lbs, numerous Amberjack over 50”, etc.

* Boston Sportfishing (Boston, MA) - (1) Bluefin Tuna up to 74” using live bait methods, (2) Cod trips with good bounty up to 20+lbs fish, (3) Winter flounder up to 2lbs, (4) Haddock, ice chests full of fish.

* Fat Tuna (Beverly, MA): Tried for Bluefin Tuna on topwater but we were unsuccessful.

* Outermost Angling (Cape Cod, MA) - Bluefin tuna up to 73” on topwater plugs.

* Big Tahuna (Cape Hatteras, NC) – (1) Bluefin tuna up to 65” on trolling and bait, lost a few nice fish on jigs, (2) Blackfin tuna with many fish up to 25lbs, most fish on jigs, some on the troll.

INSHORE SPECIES

* Adventure Charter (Wakefield, RI) –Limited out with time to spare, decent blackfish to about 9 lbs.

* Anderson Guide Services (Niantic, CT) –Striped bass up to 40+lbs.

* Bounty Hunter Charters (New Bedford, MA) – Fluke up to 8lbs.

* R&G Charters (Port Washington, NY) – (1) Striped bass up to 30+lbs, limited out each trip (2) Blackfish jigging trips with fish up to 8lbs, limited out early each time.

* Rainbow Charters (Orient Point, NY) - Striped bass up to 20+lbs.

* Nice Day II (New Bedford, MA) - Decent fishing for fluke, porgy, and sea bass.
* Sarah K Charters (East Sandwich, MA) - Very good fluke fishing.

* Searcher II Charter (Barnegat Light, NJ) –Blackfish bait fishing with fish up to 6-8lbs, limited out most trips.

* Miss Atlantic (Atlantic City, NJ) –Blackfish up to 14lbs. Tournament ran with this charter, and again, another successful outcome: Winner received $1,500.
